Crowns and Bridges

Tooth crowns fit over a natural tooth or a dental implant to enhance a tooth’s appearance and protect it from dental damage. They are often referred to as dental caps because they look like little caps. Since our dentists can match the color and size of the crown to your existing teeth, your crowns will go virtually undetected by people that see your smile. Our dentists recommend crowns for a number of dental issues that are beyond the repair of a filling, including:

  • Broken, cracked or severely decayed teeth.
  • As protection after root canals
  • To firmly hold dental bridges
  • To Improve the look of discolored, dull, or badly-shaped teeth
  • The tooth is rebuilt with a beautiful, durable dental crown.

It normally takes two appointments. The first is for preparing the tooth, taking impressions, recording the shade of your teeth, and fitting a temporary crown. The second appointment is for cementing the permanent crown.

While crowns and bridges can last a lifetime, they do sometimes come loose or fall out. The most important step you can take to ensure the longevity of your crown is to practice good oral hygiene.

Most of the time, only two dental appointments are involved in the dental crown procedure. Yet, more appointments may be needed if you need preliminary dental work. Typically, the procedure begins with a dental exam so our dentist can determine if you’re eligible for a crown. If you are, you will have your damaged tooth scraped and have an impression taken to allow our lab to produce your permanent crown. In the meantime, you will be sent home with a temporary cap that will be worn for a few weeks. After that time, you come back in for your second appointment and have your permanent crown placed and comfortably adjusted by one of our dentists.
